Lubricating oils: base oils, grades and supply

Lubricating oils reduce friction, cool and protect engines and machinery. A finished lubricant is a base oil blended with additives. Base oils are classified by API into Groups I to V according to refining process and quality.

Key facts

Lubricating Oils: what to know

  • Automotive grades are described by SAE viscosity (for example 5W-30, 15W-40)
  • Performance is defined by API and ACEA service categories
  • Marine lubricants include cylinder oils and system oils matched to fuel sulphur level
  • Industrial lubricants include hydraulic, gear and turbine oils
  • Supply formats: bulk, ISO tank, IBC, drum and retail packs
