Marine fuel (bunkering fuel): grades and rules

Marine fuel, also called bunker fuel, powers ships. It is delivered to vessels by bunker barges or at the quayside in a process called bunkering. Fuel quality is specified by ISO 8217.

Key facts

Marine Fuel (Bunkering Fuel): what to know

  • VLSFO: very-low-sulphur fuel oil, maximum 0.50% sulphur under the IMO 2020 global cap
  • HSFO: high-sulphur fuel oil (up to 3.5%) is used by ships fitted with exhaust scrubbers
  • MGO / MDO: marine gasoil and diesel oil; maximum 0.10% sulphur in emission control areas
  • Bunker delivery documents include the bunker delivery note (BDN) and a sample
  • Alternative marine fuels (LNG, methanol, ammonia) are growing but still a small share
